Happy New Years 2015! My last New Years as a Missionary! (01/05/2015)

Hello There!

This past week was really awesome!  We went to the temple, got three new investigators (with one in the works), had an awesome New Years, and had a great Zone Conference!

So for the investigators first!  A while ago, Elder Humphrey and I went to check on a former investigator who lives in the same complex as we do. He had been taught a while ago, so we weren't even sure if he still lived the, but we went anyway.  We knocked on the door and a Hispanic woman (Dominican Republic) came to the door. Shortly after that, a man comes and stands behind her, kinda in the shadows. We asked if the person we were looking for was there and she said no, and shortly found out that he didn't live there anymore. So I started talking to her about who we were and what we do and I asked a really dumb question. (Ha!  Well I guess not completely dumb because we got an appointment with them.) The question I asked was if she ever got confused on the doctrine that the bible teaches. She kinda laughed and said "no, not really". So, I again fell back to what we do as missionaries and that we help people come closer to Christ. We asked if their family would be interested in that at this point in their life. They said, "Sure!" and that we could come back to visit them! So we went back the following Saturday and really just got to know them. The father of the family worked for the US Embassy in the Dominican Republic for about 20 years. I guess when you work for the US embassy in a foreign country, (or at least in the Dominican Republic), they offer you a special deal where if you choose, you may leave everything behind, quit your job, and move to the US.  His family decided to take the opportunity and sold all of their belongings!  They sold everything they owned and moved to the U.S. with nothing but the clothes on their back. They are a super spiritual family and they are sooooo prepared. I'm really excited to work with them!

This Friday we going to attend the temple! It is actually pretty early to go to the temple for the farewell mission session, but since they will be closing the temple for cleaning, we have to go early.  It's so awesome though!  I can't remember if I told you all this or not, but I have been able (through family history and the help of my family),  to get enough family names for me to take, a family name to the temple each temple trip. I'm now on my last name and I feel a special connection with this family member because they have been waiting for me to do their ordinance work for a very long time.  :)

Then this past Tuesday we had an awesome Zone Conference!  They really focused on making sure we understood how to keep the "mission high" and how to keep ourselves progressing instead of digressing after the mission. It was really awesome and super spiritual!  They taught us how to make habits now so we can use them later.  Then the Sister Training Leaders (aka Sister ZL's), talked about the process of purification and why it's important to help us stay obedient. (The process of purification that we do is a "40 day fast" from a specific thing that keep us from being effective as missionaries. Then by the time we're done we won't have the urge to do it any more. It's pretty interesting.)

Last but not least we had an awesome New Years!  Every Wednesday night one or more of the members get together and feed the all the missionaries in the ward (which is about five companionships). Well since this past Wednesday was New Years, the member who was assigned to feed us could only feed us around 7ish. However the AP's told everyone they had to be in at 5:30 pm. When we told the member (Brother H.) that, he told us he would call the AP's and get permission for us to go to the dinner at the later time. Now both of the AP's have served in this ward and love Bro. H., so we thought for sure we would get permission!  Well, Bro. H called us back and told us that the AP's said they had not taken into consideration ward events but they had already told other people no, so they had to tell us no as well. Bro. H. wasn't too happy about that because he spent..... Wait for it...... Close to, if not over, $300 on food and decorations for New Years.    It was nuts!! He got party hats, party horns, sun glasses (in the shape of the numbers 2015) rootbeer, ginger ale, Martinelli sparkling cider, ribs, meatballs, steak fries, chicken wings, and rolls. It was soooooo awesome!  Then for dessert he gave us ice cream brownie sundaes! We were so spoiled it was awesome!

Oh yeah! I almost forgot!  When we were biking home from an appointment that dogged us, we went past a 7-Eleven. Elder Humphrey had a 7-Eleven gift card, so we decided to get hot chocolates!   When we came out and got to our bikes, we realized we didn't have a way to transfer it home and  on top of that it was now raining. So.... We biked home in the rain with one hand steering the bike and the other hand holding the hot chocolate!  Haha!  It was the best! I'll have to send pictures later.

Well that was our fantastic week!!! We had tons of fun and lots of spiritual moments! I hope you all had a great week and have an awesome New Year!  Have a great week ahead!

Love,

Elder Gold
