My Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week. (With a little good mixed in...) (1/19/2015)

Hello there!

Ha threw you off, didn't I?  You probably thought I was going to start off by saying, "Hey everyone!". Ha!  Well, anyway, I hope every one has had a great week!  Our week was good, but kind of a bummer. We had a lot of appointments set up and then like 90% of them fell through.

We were going to go over and teach Anatole and also bring a member with us to be a good fellow-shipper.  This member is pretty good with computers too, and Anatole had said he he needed help with his computer because I guess he's got a ton of malware and viruses. Well a couple of days before we met with him he texted us and told us that he couldn't meet.  He said, that there was just a ton of stuff that he had to do and he was feeling really overwhelmed. So we rescheduled.

Then we had an appointment with potential investigators named Johnny and Crystal. They had attended the Festival of Lights where a sister had talked to them and they said missionaries could come over.  We have been trying to set up appointments with them and have them follow through, but things just seem to keep getting in the way. The first time we went, Johnny's house (and his wife) weren't decent.  Haha!  The next time, he was at a meeting and wasn't going to make it back in time. Then this last appointment, his mother went into the hospital. I'm not sure how much longer we are going to keep trying to visit with them. Maybe a few more times and then we might drop them. We'll see!

The last one that fell through was with a member family. The Phantumhive Family!  The husband's name is Sir Derik Phantumhive, which I think is awesome! He actually changed his name legally to that. It used to be a normal name. He used to be a pretty successful "recreational pharmaceutical rep".  Then he had an accident where he fell out of a window and just thought to himself "This is it!  I'm going to die. This is how I've lived my life? What a waste!".  Well he survived the fall because he landed on a car.  From that point on he forsook the pharmaceutical life and found the church.  It became obvious why he changed his name.   But then again, he's a pretty spontaneous dude, so he could have just done it for fun. Who knows!  Any who, we had an appointment with them, but they ended up canceling because they were out and they weren't going to make it back in time.  We are going to try again this week.

The rest of the week was just a bad week for everyone.  No one could meet with us. We did, however, have a couple of appointments that didn't fall through!  We meet with Sister J. and Sister U.  Both of them are people that we usually try to visit with weekly and have Book of Mormon studies with them. Sister U. was baptized June of last year and Sister J. is a long time convert, meaning she's been a member for a while.  This past week with Sister J, we read Ether 12 and Mosiah 2 with her. She really liked both of those chapters. She said she would need to re-read it because her brain is fried by drugs so it take a little longer to have things sink in ha. (That's how most of the ghetto population of D.C. is.  They are all either fried by drugs and alcohol or they have mental disabilities because their the mothers drank and did drugs when they were pregnant. It's pretty sad. Anyway, Sister J. is a wonderful lady and is really doing her best to come unto Christ and learn his word, which is awesome :).

Then with U., we usually just read a chapter or two from the Book of Mormon. Well this past week due to getting transfer call outs we couldn't stay very long, which meant we didn't have time to read a chapter with her. Instead we shared the Mormon Message that came out just a few months ago, I believe I even posted it about it on Facebook.  It is called "The Hope of God's Light". It is a story about an atheist guy who was doing well in life and then everything came crashing down.  He wanted to end his life. Then things started happening to him that made him not want to end his life.  For example, he heard about fasting, and in the end came to know that God is there and that he knew him by name. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend you watch it!
We showed that to Sister J.  She really liked it and what stood out the most for her is that God loves all of us so much and that he knows us all by name. We also talked about the first time she felt the spirit.  Then I shared the first time I had ACTUALLY felt the spirit as a kid when we lived with my grandmother. It was a really spiritual and awesome lesson :).

Well as I mentioned, we had to leave early from teaching Sister U. because we had to be in by 9:00pm for the transfer call out!!  The Spanish Elders who live above us came down and we all waited for the call out (a massive voicemail the ZL's send to the entire zone). It finally came and we were all anxious!  They got to the Spanish Elders first and one of them is leaving!  I think/hope that Elder Manning is coming to replace him because that would be awesome!  Then they got to our district!  Elder Peterson is going home and Elder Hall is being transferred out! Everyone else is staying! Which means I will be "dying" in the DC 3rd ward with Elder Humphrey!  I'm so excited! I love Elder Humphrey!  I mean the area can be challenging, but it becomes better and easier when you have a good companion :).

So this Wednesday is transfers and it will start the last transfer of my mission. I won't go into too much description of my feelings for my mission because I'll save that for my last p-day email.  It is crazy though how quickly time has flown. It feels like yesterday I was going into my third area. Now, this last transfer is going to just blow by. I asked Elder Peterson when I should start sending stuff home and he told me ASAP.  It was so weird listening to Elder Peterson while he's telling me everything I needed to do to prepare to go home. Well even though I'm going home soon, I'm still going to work hard and make sure I go out with a bang :).

Well I hope you all are safe and doing well! I hope you have a great week! I just want to let you all know how much I love you, and not only me, but how much Heavenly Father and our loving brother and Savior Jesus Christ does as well. They know who you are and they know what you're going through. Please don't be afraid or too prideful to turn to them when you need to so you can ask for help. They are there and waiting for you to seek them out.

Have a great week everyone :)

Love,
Elder Gold
