Crofton on the Green (9/29/2014)

Hey everyone!

This past week has been pretty busy!  Unfortunately not with investigators though. We have been trying to go around to all the members in our half of the ward and just get to know them better. We have met so many wonderful members and the ward absolutely loves the missionaries in their home. As I mentioned before, they love to feed us so that way we are in their home. It's been so nice to get to know the members and learning about what they do for work, where they're from and stuff like that. The head, personal physician of President Obama is in our ward. I think he might actually be in the sisters area, but that's ok.

The Bishop actually had a referral for us this last Sunday! He came up and said that he had "one" for us and hands us a post card.  In the post card, it was someone that had written, apologizing for discontinuing to meet with the church and so on and so forth. We were super pumped that we finally had someone to work with.  Then we realized that it was in the sister's area. Well before I passed the info on, I looked on the post card and it said "Prince George County Correctional" something or other and I was like "I think that's a prison!". So I looked up the address and sure enough it was. This dude had sent out a post card asking for someone to go and visit with him in jail.  We told bishop we weren't allowed to go to the jail.  Bishop said he didn't know it was a jail and that he would go himself.

So yesterday, (Sunday), there was a mission farewell in our ward. His name is Elder W. and he's going California San Diego, Spanish speaking mission. It's funny though because from what his mom told us, he was being a pretty big turd about the whole farewell thing. He told his mom to just butt out of everything and that he didn't want a farewell open house and he didn't want to talk in church either. Well he still spoke in church, but when he stood up he didn't have any notes. So I'm thinking "oh cool he must be a very good speaker then."..... Nope.  He just didn't prepare anything. I mean it was really good to hear his testimony and to hear why he was going in a mission, but you could tell that he didn't prepare anything and he would pause a lot like he was trying to think what to say. I was just baffled that he didn't want a open house to say bye to people and especially that he didn't care enough to prepare his talk. It's OK though because at least he's going on a mission and he has the testimony to do so. They mission will only change him for the better from there :).

Also this past Saturday we were able to help out at, and have a booth at an event that the city of Crofton MD puts on called "Crofton on the Green". It was basically like Summer-fest for Orem, but without the big rides and carnival games. They did have a bounce house for the little kids though.  The reason for us having a booth there was because we arrived as the "Mormon Helping Hands" group to help people set up, take down, and man their booths if they needed food or went to the bathroom. Then we also manned the bounce houses and watched the little kids and made sure they weren't getting too rough. We actually did that for a while.  (I got an awkward sunburn where like the right half of my face was burned and only the right side of each arm was burned, it was great).

Then we went back to our booth and helped watch over everything there, while the sisters went and got food.  While they were gone, a family walked by our booth and the kids actually came up to us.  There was a boy of maybe the age of 7 or 8 that came up and asked if he could have a card. Then his other siblings came up and grabbed one as well. His older sister, (maybe about 10), came up and grabbed a Book of Mormon and a finding faith in Christ DVD!  It was awesome! Then the 7-8 year old brother came back and grabbed a Book of Mormon as well. Ha I think he just wanted the free stuff, but his sister looked really interested in the Book of Mormon. I wish I had time to explain things to her but her parents called them back and they left. It was really awesome :)

Now, as do my companion. I really like him a lot, he's a really good kid. He's 19, 6'6", and from wellsville ut. He's always trying to do service for me. Like last night he dusted my shoes after doing his own. Then he's always offering his stuff for me to use and he's just an awesome guy. He always takes the "Be with your companion at all times" rule very seriously.  :)  I love the guy though and we have a lot of good laughs. It's actually been really enjoyable being In a two man apartment, where as I really thought that I would hate it because I did when I was in a two man apartment in previous areas.

Well that has been our great week! We met lots of members, enjoyed Crofton on the Green, and helped out the bishop! I hope you had a fantastic week! Love you all!

Love,
Elder Gold
